Starting a fire on extremely wet ground.

Some thing we have in abundance here in Southeast Alaska is muskeg. Muskeg is acidic mossy terrain that is almost always wet and can be extremely difficult to start a fire on top of. In this picture three slices of wood have been latest down with the fire stared in the middle, this allows air to get to the bottom of the fire and helps it get going quicker. Without a saw to cut the slices you can also build something akin to a raft out of two to four inch thick branches with your tinder on top.

In this picture we are using an electric camping mattress inflation pump to accelerate the fire. No it’s not cheating, it’s using the resources available to you.
