Check Dates In Your Medical Kit:

Summer is heading towards us and that means more outings in the better weather. That also means its time to check the dates on the medical kits once again. A practice some people need a gentle reminder on.

Im not here to discuss what you should or should not have in your kit, Im also not going to say that some new gadget is a must have, I will simply say if you are not trained how to use something, the chances are you dont want to be Florence Nightingale and kill more people than you save. So dont own or use anything if you are not sure of its purpose.

I would encourage you to take a first aid course, everyone should have the most basic of knowledge. If you dont do that always carry a plaster and a mobile phone with you. If you need more than a plaster, USE THE PHONE!

Ive checked all of my medical kits today in preparation, anything that has expired has been disposed of and replaced. For my general EDC kit, or while out walking/on the bike I carry a Kifaru drop in that houses a few essentials. Large trauma pads, cleaning pads, pain killers in the form of morphine, two broad spectrum antibiotics, a water bag with sterilising tablets to clean wounds and hydrate after receiving care, plasters and steristrips etc. Its light and compact and fits in any pocket or bag. Nothing complex, but it can take care of most things on a day to day level.

The advanced kit is housed in the Karrimor Medical pouch. This is a tear off pouch housing Israeli bandages, CAT tourniquet, Morphine, antibiotics, trauma pads, EMT Shears, Scalpels, wound dressings and a host of other items that I dont feel we should discuss here.

Everything is in date, everything is sterile and no packs have popped or split. If I need it, the kit is ready to be used. The EMT shears are easy to get at to remove clothing, and blood control, cleaning agents and dressings are laid out in the order required to deal with a situation.

The CAT was replaced for a newer item so its still in the packaging. The nicer weather is approaching, and so is tick season. Please ensure you have a few basics with you to deal with the minor problems we all get from time to time. Also check yourself and other family members for ticks and remove them with a correct tool, do not burn or pull them off.

Be safe and Enjoy the countryside.
