law66: Improvised Solution: The complicated water bottles you...

When it fails, remake it.

You just use what you have, to make what you need.

Improvised Solution:

The complicated water bottles you get that filter all in one are great. The price can be high on them but they work when you need it most of the time. In a recent outing, one of the bottles failed from dropping it. The filter cracked, making it no longer possible to get clean water.

We did have other bottles between us, but if this was a situation where that was not possible, or where that is simply not viable you have to look to your own solution.

So in the interests of a fun bit of thinking we set about trying to fix or improvise a new solution. The only rule was using anything we had to hand. Luckily having a vehicle gave us lengths of hose. I would hasten to add that anything from the coolant system would contain antifreeze which is highly toxic, clean it thoroughly and only use in a survival situation. Using the Law Industries TinderTabs as a base filter I inserted it into the tubing. For the purposes of the pics above Ive used a clear PVC tube. On top of the TinderTabs I placed some charcoal from a fire I lit purely to get the charcoal. On top of this was some sand from a stream nearby and another tindertab to hold it all in place. The tube was placed over the bottle spout and pressed firmly on. As long as you squeezed steadily the water flowed and was clear enough to drink. With a water bladder the improvised filter was simply patched in where the mouth piece was using bits from the spares kit. I know it wont catch every little micro-bug on the planet, but dirt and larger impurities were removed and the water was clear after filtration.

We normally carry additional water containers and inside one of those now lives a length of PVC pipe for syphoning water or for making other items. Ive said often enough, Ive taught it often enough, ‘make what you have, do what you need’. There is always an answer if you just sit down and look at it all calmly.

One of the other solutions used a can. A small hole was placed in the bottom, it was filled with stones, sand, charcoal and an off cut of goretex and a bit of coffee filter. It also worked well enough to filter the water to clear enough to drink. It take take some time and a lot of water to get the filter wet enough and full enough for gravity to start the filtration process. The broken bottle itself could have been used for this as a solution of course.

If you have a go yourself and make a filter, email me some pics so I can share them law66@live.co.uk
