Windson Low Tech

Project Black Box

A couple of weeks ago, my mate @law66 sent a black box with a couple of items along with the question to build an EDC kit that allows you to over come daily obstacles.

With that, and in accordance with prior principles, I took inventory and composed a group of items that would make up simple kit with items that are hard to emulate and will help you find and use collateral materials for the purpose of getting around and or out most urban situations.

Here is what I got from Law (compare the first picture) —

  • SOLAS patches (2)

  • Compass

  • Wire

  • Scalpel blades (2)

  • Razor blades (2)

  • Safety pins

  • Small tin

  • Tinder tabs

  • A card with first reaction points

Since my scope is urban, I removed the wilderness-focused card and the tinder tabs and replaced the latter with a tampon, which provides similar, and more uses.

I also added —

  • Note pad (waterproof paper) & pencil

  • Duct tape & cordage & needles

  • Piece of moleskin

  • Bobby pins, paperclips

  • Fresnel magnifying card

  • Simple sewing kit

  • Photon light & spare battery

  • P52 can opener

  • SOG multi-tool

  • 1l plastic bag

  • Band aids and pain meds

  • A very basic GTFO set with custom Bogota lockpicks and a pair of shims

The very sturdy box is held together with Ranger bands and kept in a strong zip-loc plastic bag.

The small tin in the lower right of the pictures is a nice item and will become the housing for another minimalistic kit.

Nice kit. I like the focus on the urban aspect. How do you carry your kit? I carry a few urban tools in a Micro SERE pouch from Law66.

I had thought of a kit similar to that, but I work in a secure area and the kit would have to stay with the rest of my bug out gear- in my car’s trunk (boot, for my British friends).

You guys never fail, this is why it was so much fun. Mine coming tomorrow and some updates from others
